Packing for an expedition cruise looks very different from packing for a typical vacation.

You are not packing for pool days and city exploring. You are packing for changing weather, outdoor adventures, and some of the most remote places on Earth. The good news is, once you understand what you actually need, it becomes much simpler than it sounds.

Here is exactly how I would pack for an expedition cruise.

Start with Layers, Not Bulk

The biggest mistake people make is overpacking heavy clothing.

Instead, think in layers. This allows you to adjust throughout the day depending on weather and activity level.

I always recommend:

  • A moisture wicking base layer
  • A warm mid layer like a fleece or insulated jacket
  • A waterproof and windproof outer layer

This combination keeps you comfortable whether you are on deck watching wildlife or heading out on a Zodiac landing.

Waterproof Gear Is a Must

You will be spending time on Zodiac boats and potentially doing wet landings, especially in places like Antarctica.

Waterproof pants and a quality waterproof jacket are essential. Even if conditions look calm, the weather can change quickly, and staying dry makes a huge difference in your overall experience.

Footwear Matters More Than You Think

Shoes can make or break this type of trip.

For most expedition cruises, you will want:

  • Comfortable walking or hiking shoes for onboard and light excursions

HX Expeditions often provides boots for landings, which is one less thing to worry about packing.

Do Not Forget the Accessories

The smaller items are often the ones people overlook, but they make a big difference.

Make sure to bring:

  • Warm hat and gloves
  • Wool or thermal socks
  • Sunglasses with UV protection
  • Sunscreen, even in colder destinations

Cold environments can still be very bright, especially with reflection from snow and ice.

Bring the Right Gear for Wildlife Viewing

You are going to see incredible wildlife, and you will want to capture it.

I always suggest:

  • A good camera or smartphone with storage space
  • Extra batteries or a portable charger
  • Binoculars for spotting wildlife from a distance

These small additions really enhance the experience.

Motion Comfort and Personal Items

Even though expedition ships are designed for stability, you may still experience movement depending on the destination.

It is a good idea to pack:

  • Motion sickness remedies if you are prone to it
  • Any personal medications
  • A small daypack for excursions

Having these items easily accessible makes each day more comfortable.

What You Do Not Need to Pack

This is just as important as what you do pack.

With HX Expeditions, some items are often included, like:

  • Expedition jackets
  • Boots for landings
  • Equipment for certain activities

Knowing this helps you avoid overpacking and keeps your luggage manageable.

Keep It Simple

At the end of the day, packing for an expedition cruise is about being prepared, not overprepared.

You are not going for fashion, you are going for experience. Comfort, functionality, and layering will take you much further than overpacking ever will.

Once you are there, you will be focused on the landscapes, the wildlife, and the moments you cannot recreate anywhere else.
