Don’t Book Your Train Until You Compare These Two Options
Italy is one of our favorite destinations to plan, and for good reason. Most of our travelers aren’t staying in just one place—they’re exploring multiple regions, hopping between iconic cities, and discovering charming towns along the way. Whether you’re sipping wine in Tuscany, wandering the canals of Venice, or ending your journey along the Amalfi Coast, chances are you’ll be spending some time on Italy’s incredible high-speed rail network.
One of the most common assumptions we see is that there is only one option for booking high-speed trains.
In reality, Italy has two major high-speed rail companies serving many of the country’s busiest routes: Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa and Italo.
If you’re traveling between popular cities such as Rome, Florence, Milan, Venice, Bologna, or Naples, both companies often operate trains on the same routes. The travel time is very similar, and both offer reserved seating, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, comfortable cabins, and an efficient travel experience.
So what is the biggest difference?
Price.
Many travelers automatically book with Frecciarossa simply because it’s the most recognizable name. While it’s an excellent service, Italo frequently offers lower promotional fares on the exact same route. Depending on the day and departure time, comparing both companies can result in meaningful savings—sometimes enough to cover dinner, a museum admission, or that evening aperitivo.
But the lowest fare isn’t always the best value.
While Italo can often be the less expensive option, Frecciarossa has advantages that make it the better choice in certain situations.
Frecciarossa operates a larger network throughout Italy, making it easier to continue your journey beyond the major cities. If your itinerary includes smaller towns or regional destinations, you can often book your high-speed and regional trains together on one reservation. It also tends to offer more departure times throughout the day and may have promotions that benefit families or groups traveling together.
Our recommendation
When you’re traveling directly between Italy’s major cities, compare prices on both Italo and Frecciarossa before purchasing your ticket.
If your itinerary includes connections, smaller towns, or multiple train segments, take a closer look at Frecciarossa as well. The convenience of one integrated booking can often outweigh a small difference in price.
